EnergyAustralia: Moving house made easy

EnergyAustralia simplifies the process of setting up electricity at your new home, whether you're considering switching to EnergyAustralia for your new house, bundling EnergyAustralia's energy and NBN services, or simply transferring your existing plan to your new location.

For most Australians relocating and wishing to join EnergyAustralia, the process is quite simple.

Whether you're a new or existing EnergyAustralia customer, you only need to provide your new address and the date you require the energy supply to be connected.

About EnergyAustralia

EnergyAustralia provides carbon-neutral plans, specialised solar options, and cutting-edge energy management tools.

Through Compare Energy, you can take a look at EnergyAustralia’s electricity and gas plans to determine if they fit your household’s needs.

EnergyAustralia: New customer connections

If you haven't compared energy plans recently, moving house is an ideal opportunity to find a better deal.

If you've chosen EnergyAustralia for your new home, the switching process is straightforward with Compare Energy, whether it's for your current address or your new one.

To sign up with EnergyAustralia while moving, you need to confirm the following:

  • Whether you want to switch to EnergyAustralia at your current address or connect at your new address
  • Whether you are an existing or new EnergyAustralia customer
  • Your desired EnergyAustralia connection date
  • Then, you'll need to provide some personal information and identification details, including:
  • Name, date of birth, and contact information
  • Valid identification
  • Billing and correspondence preferences
  • Additional account holders
  • If you want to set up direct debit as your payment method
  • Any energy concessions or rebates you qualify for
  • If you have solar panels at your new property, contact EnergyAustralia directly to arrange your connection.

Don't forget to inform your previous energy provider to disconnect service at your old address. It's smart to choose a disconnection date that falls after your move, as disconnections can happen as early as 7 a.m., and you may need electricity on your moving day.

EnergyAustralia: Existing customer connections

If you’re an existing EnergyAustralia customer moving house, you have two simple options to transfer your service:

  • EnergyAustralia My Account
  • Log in to your EnergyAustralia account.
  • Go to "Moving Home" and select "Move My Service".
  • This is the easiest way to arrange your move since it’s already linked to your account information.
  • Sign up for EnergyAustralia online
  • If you don't have an EnergyAustralia login, you can set up your move online.
  • Enter your new address as you would when signing up as a new customer.
  • Provide your account number, current address postcode, and valid identification.
  • EnergyAustralia will handle both the connection at your new address and the disconnection at your old one.

To ensure your disconnection at your old address happens on time, contact EnergyAustralia at least 3 business days before your move.

EnergyAustralia: Connection and disconnection fees

When relocating, you might incur an EnergyAustralia disconnection fee or other charges related to your energy meter - but these are not set by EnergyAustralia.

Connection and disconnection fees come from the energy distributor that passes the cost through EnergyAustralia. Some of the fees that could be incurred include:

  • Solar meter installation fee: For replacing your current meter with one compatible with solar energy export.
  • Disconnection fee: For vacating your current address and disconnecting the electricity or gas supply, which may also include a meter reading for your final bill.
  • Reconnection fee: For setting up your electricity or gas connection at your new property.
  • Special meter read fee: For having your meter read outside the usual quarterly schedule upon request.

If you have a smart meter, your energy distributor might be able to read it remotely, potentially reducing or waiving some of these fees.

While these costs are often unavoidable when moving, the fees vary based on the type of energy connection (electricity or gas), your energy distributor, and the required meter service.

EnergyAustralia Power Guarantee

EnergyAustralia ensures that your new home will have power on the day you move in.

With its Power On the Day You Move guarantee, if your energy isn't switched on at your new address by your moving day, you'll receive a $100 credit on your next EnergyAustralia bill.

Customers should remember to give EnergyAustralia at least one business day's notice to connect the new address.

There are some moments that the guarantee doesn't apply, however. It won’t apply if:

  • The residence hasn't had electricity connected for 12+ months.
  • You provided incorrect information about the date or connection address.
  • Safety concerns prevented a safe connection.
  • Circumstances beyond EnergyAustralia's control, such as weather or natural disasters, cause delays.

To make a Power On guarantee claim, contact Compare Energy and ask us about it.

EnergyAustralia urgent connections

Planning your move well in advance is crucial to avoid last-minute stress, especially when it comes to setting up your energy connection.

EnergyAustralia's moving house team advises arranging your new address connection at least two business days in advance. However, if you need a connection more urgently, they can accommodate your request.

Are customers expected to be present for installation?

Typically, you don’t have to be present at your new property for the power connection, provided there is safe and clear access to the meter and the main switch is turned off. EnergyAustralia will contact you if there are any issues.

However, if you reside in Queensland, you must be present for the connection because a Visual Safety Inspection is required. Ensure you have enough time set aside for this inspection to be completed.
