AGL: Moving house made easy

Whether you're a new or long-standing customer, organising your move with AGL is easy and can be done within a few business days.

Whether you're moving house, need a new connection at a new build, or want to arrange a gas disconnection, you can find all the information you need in our guide below.

About AGL

AGL, short for the Australian Gas Light Company, provides energy plans customised to match your electricity and gas needs, all without any binding contracts.

You can opt for monthly billing to better manage your expenses, and their mobile app is a convenient tool for monitoring your energy usage and switching plans effortlessly.

Easy steps for moving house with AGL

The process of moving house with AGL is quite easy, whether you're already an AGL customer or looking to set up a new connection with AGL. It’s so easy, we’ve got a step by step list to cover you:

  • Visit the AGL Moving House Sign Up page.
  • Log in to AGL My Account if you're an existing customer, or provide your new address details if you're not.
  • Choose your AGL electricity and/or gas plan and compare rates for your new address.
  • Arrange your AGL connection date. Existing customers can do this through AGL My Account, while new customers can choose their connection date during sign-up.
  • Organise your AGL energy disconnection at your current address. New customers need to contact their current energy provider, while existing customers can choose their disconnection date when arranging their move.
  • Track your AGL connection using the reference number and link sent in your confirmation email or through AGL My Account.
  • On the day of your AGL connection, ensure clear access to the meter, and switch off the electrical switch at your new property.

AGL requires at least one business day to organise your electricity connection and at least three business days for a gas connection when moving house.

Disconnecting AGL

When moving out, it's important to disconnect the energy supply at your current address so you’re not charged as a customer while you’re not living there. You can do this by selecting your disconnection date through your AGL My Account.

If you’ve contacted Compare Energy and you’re switching energy providers, direct contact is necessary to disconnect your current address no matter who your old provider was.

Disconnections with AGL can happen at any time after 7am on your chosen day, so it’s usually advised to wait until the day after you physically move to disconnect.

Disconnection fees, which vary depending on your energy distributor, meter type, and location, will be detailed in your final energy bill.

New connections with AGL

AGL offers a new connection service that require a new meter or service line. It also applies to properties where solar panels are being installed.

The process for applying for a new AGL gas or electricity connection is quite similar, with some key distinctions.

If you're moving into a new build that needs a new connection, you can learn more about AGL's new connections below:

AGL gas connections

When customers are applying for an AGL gas connection for their new build, they can choose from three types of connections. Each type follows the same application process, but the time it takes to complete the connection varies.

The types of AGL gas connections available are:

  • Mains connection: This is for properties where there are no existing gas mains on the street of the new building.
  • Service line installation: This option is for connecting the gas mains to the gas meter.
  • Meter only installation: If you have an existing service line but no physical meter, you can apply for this type of installation.

To apply for an AGL gas connection, submit your application on the AGL website and wait for your new energy distributor to process it. From here, you can have your AGL gas connection at the new house installed.

The length of time installation takes will depend on the type of AGL gas connection you need. It can take up to eight wells to complete and so it’s vital to plan accordingly.

AGL electricity connections

If the new building that you’re moving into that requires an AGL electricity connection, you could wait up to six business days for installation of a new meter. Planning ahead matters and it could take even longer if it might disrupt the energy supply of your neighbour. To get your new AGL electricity connection, follow these steps:

  • Submit your new AGL electricity connection application on the New Connections Platform.
  • Wait for your electricity distributor to process your application.
  • Receive your installation date. Ensure there is clear and safe access to the property's proposed meter location on the day of your new AGL connection.
  • Receive confirmation of your new AGL electricity connection and any connection fees or charges that might apply.

AGL connection fees

If you’re planning your AGL moving house connection, then it can help to understand the fees you might be looking at. Fees that you pay will depend on many things, including:

  • The type of service you need
  • Location and energy distributor
  • Remote meter vs smart meter
  • Timing of the meter read

What to do for your AGL connection to go smoothly in your new address

When arranging a connection with AGL at your new address, ensure that your main electrical switch is turned off for a safe connection. If you cannot access your new property, your real estate agent can shine a light on what to do.

If you live in Queensland, you must be there at your new property for a Visual Safety Inspection when getting your power connected. However, you typically do not need to be present for the actual connection as long as there is safe and clear access to the meter and the main switch is turned off.
